Strawberry season is coming to and end here in California, and raspberries are at their height of deliciousness, so naturally I'm on high berry-hoarding alert, indulging in these naturally sweet treats while they're at their peak, and freezing what I can't eat for winter pick-me-ups.
Strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and raspberries are a great choice for smoothies or when reaching for something to satisfy your sweet tooth—they are actually LOW in sugar and carbohydrates as far as fruit goes, and they are packed with brain-boosting flavonoids, heart-healthy antioxidants and fiber to help with digestion and keep you feeling full longer.
Here's my current smoothie of choice... I'm hanging on to summer as long as I can;)
1/2 cup total of fresh organic raspberries and strawberries
4-5 sprigs of fresh mint
1/3 frozen organic banana
1 cup of unsweetened almond milk (I use homemade)
3-4 ice cubes
Optional: 1 tbsp of protein-packed collagen or your favorite protein powder.
Blend all items, adding ice halfway through, until smooth. Serve chilled.
